Ranged. He stands from the line and fires his pistol. It'll make him more survivable as well.

Perhaps he can be both a ranged and melee hero? Cause I do think commies wear swords for a reason apart from cerimonial value, gains +? bonus to health and armour or something? @ Cellrawr, perhaps one of his spells can be changed to put him in a tank?
